Overview

Whether you're a big fan of drum and bass or you just love a good scenic shot of Aotearoa, you'll want to get your peepers across this cinematic offering from local music producer Montell2099 — which is less of a music video and more of a stunningly executed short film.

Fans of the Aotearoa DJ will be more than familiar with his 2020 production Live From Karekare, which saw the rugged West Coast beach become his stage. That video, showcasing a 30-minute sunset set illuminated by a custom light display, has amassed over 250,0000 views.

Now it has a follow-up — on an even more impressive scale. Live From Lake Alta sees the artist turn an ice lake amongst the snowy peaks of Queenstown's Remarkables into his personal stage, accompanied once against by a light show from lighting and stage design wizards Human Person. For the uninitiated, they're the brains behind the lighting sets for a few up-and-comers like Drake and Billie Eilish.

A kind of anti-Tiktok, the rugged and wild 30-minute film clip was uploaded to YouTube on Friday, December 9 — and at the time of publishing has already amassed over 8000 views.

Whether you're popping it on the speakers at a party this weekend or you're just going to enjoy it on the small screen, it's absolutely worth joining the thousands to check it out. Alongside the film's release, a limited edition t-shirt will be for sale, with all profits going towards Kea Conservation, a partner of The Remarkables and Ngāi Tahu.

Montell2099's 'Live from Lake Alta' short film is online now.
