Overview

Auckland Live has dropped the lineup for its outdoor entertainment series, offering city-goers free films, music and activations from 3 December, 2019 to 9 February, 2020.

Highlights from this year's Summer in the Square program include an interactive dance party that's over in as little as ten minutes. The suitably titled 10 Minute Dance Parties invite participants to shimmy, shake, bop and groove inside a converted shipping container in Aotea Square. The pop-up led by Melbourne creative Joseph O'Farrell aims to celebrate the universal joy of having a boogie.

From 5 December, the Auckland Live Digital Stage will light up with Films in the Square. Every Thursday night there will be screenings of cinematic classics and short films, including Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Wings of Desire and Poi E, while Sunday afternoons will screen top documentaries.

More than 500 of Tāmaki Makaurau's best kapa haka performers will battle it out in a fierce competition at the Te Matatini Traditional Māori Performing Arts Festival from 24–25 January. As the action unfolds inside Aotea Centre, there will be kai, waiata and kapa haka performances on show  for the public in the Square.

The 2019/20 Music in the Square lineup includes 40 local and international acts ranging from electronic pop by way of Glasgow to raucous sing-along group and roaming live discos. A whole week will also be dedicated to the world folk music, while alumni from the Girls Rock Camp will assemble for a one-off showcase.

OurParty, the finale of the series will fall in line with the 2020 Auckland Pride Festival, as Aotea Square comes alive with musicians, artists, performers, dancers and food trucks from the city's rainbow community.

Auckland Live's Summer in the Square runs from 3 December, 2019 to 9 February, 2020. For more information, visit aucklandlive.co.nz.
