Those on the lookout for New Year's plans and an excuse to head yonder may well be tempted by the first lineup of acts just announced for the South Island's largest music festival. From December 29–31, 10,000 people are expected to land in the Cardrona Valley for Rhythm and Alps. It will be the ninth year the festival has been held in the picture-perfect location just outside of Wanaka.

London artist Wilkinson has been confirmed to play the headline New Year's Eve slot, toting a full band and a small string orchestra. Another international drawcard of the lineup is American trap and bass producer RL Grime who makes a return to the Southern Alps to light up the main stage on December 30.

British electronic artist Jon Hopkins will take the stage with a live AV show, while US rapper Freddie Gibbs will make his first festival appearance in the country. Also on the bill is British electronic music producer Floating Points, Jurassic 5 frontman Chali 2na together with DJ Krafty Kuts in a double bill, multi-genre princess Eva Lazarus, and UK veteran jungle producer Shy FX.
