Overview

Sydney electro hip hop duo Hermitude have had one hellova a busy year. As well as adding a new album to their repertoire and penning a shiny new deal with US label Nettwerk Records, the duo have spent the majority of their time on the festival bandwagon, flaunting their genre-bending style at the likes of the New York's Governor's Ball, Buku Festival and SXSW in Texas.

The last time they performed in New Zealand was with fellow countryman Chet Faker at Rhythm and Vines in 2014, but this time the pair will return for their own headlining shows in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.

To get you prepped for the gig, we've pulled together five things you may not have known about the Sydney producers.

Thanks to Tiger Beer and Robin Fernando, you can win tickets to their Auckland (10 July) or Wellington (11 July) shows. Simply head to Tiger Beer's Fortune Avenue to enter the draw.

They've Been Collaborating With Each Other Since Day One

Although founding members Luke Dubber and Angus Stuart have spent the best part of 12 years performing under the title Hermitude, their musical history in fact goes much deeper. The pair have collaborated in groups since their school days, both playing in bands Funk Injections and Explanetary. It wasn't until they picked up a pair of turntables and began jamming that they decided to push forward under the Hermitude title.

They're Actually Hermits IRL

The name refers to their early days when they were hard at work in a recording studio owned by Angus' father called Sound Heaven. The studio is located in Blue Mountains which gave them a way to work in solitude and away from distractions. They would occasionally come out to test the new material in local clubs.

There Are No USBs in Sight at Their Shows

Both are multi-instrumentalists and their live shows are typically far more interactive than the average DJ set. Between them they use drum programming and mixing with wireless synthesisers, bass guitar and percussion. So people know they're playing everything live and can see what they're doing, they often have cameras attached to their gear.

They Work with New Zealanders Too

'The Buzz', the second single released off their sixth album is the group's highest-charting song, aside from Flume's remix of their song 'HyperParadise' which went bonkers and racked up double platinum figures across the ditch. The track features Mataya and Wellington rapper Young Tapz, who was tracked down online. It's not the only collaboration with the Kiwi, who also appears on the track, 'Through The Roof'. Young Tapz will also be providing support for Hermitude at all New Zealand dates.

Their Extra Curricular Activities Include Music with a Side of Music

Angus has spent the last couple of years playing and touring with Aussie electro-pop musician Paul Mac as percussionist and DJ, whilst Luke has lent his keyboard skills to Sydney outfits Gauche, The Tango Saloon and The Bird, as well as the touring circus stage production Tom Tom Crew.
