The time of year has come to put your Netflix account on hold and venture outdoors to get your motion picture fix. Silo Park has unveiled the program for its ninth season with a jam-packed schedule of films, food markets and free live entertainment taking place under the stars at the waterfront community space.

The 2019–20 season kicks off on 20 December with three days of Christmas festivities. The first Friday night event will feature the ever-popular Silo bar and a free yuletide classic selected by public vote. And in true Christmas spirit, all proceeds from popcorn sales will go to the Auckland City Mission.

From there, the lineup of films to screen on the former petrochemical silos includes a selection of freshly released blockbusters and timeless classics. Dust off your picnic rug and head down early to nab a spot for thought-provoking documentary 2040, New Zealand Film Festival favourite The Farewell, classic fairy tale The Princess Bride or Elton John musical biopic Rocketman. Early 2020 highlights include a day dedicated to musical percussion — from Japanese taiko drums to potato synthesisers — and the return of the Ice Cream Sundae market across Auckland Anniversary Weekend. The event will see top food trucks come together and scoop modern interpretations of the summer treat.

Elsewhere, Wellington six-piece The Phoenix Foundation will perform a free show as part of the annual Silo Sessions on February 2, Bespoke will celebrate all things bicycle (plus lots of other cool things on wheels), and World on the Street will serve up two weekends of global street food.

Furry friends are also welcome at the waterfront space. Returning on 21 March, Dog Day Afternoon will involve a bunch of canine-related activities and street food, while Silo Zoo will feature animal-themed games, workshops, and the opportunity to hold reptiles, amphibians, insects, spiders and exotic creatures.

The season will wrap up with the yet-to-be-announced Silo Cinema Season Finale on 27 March and The Great Silo Park Neighbourhood Block Party the day following.

The 2019–20 Silo Summer Season will take place from 20 December and 28 March. For the full program and more information, visit silopark.co.nz.
