Overview

Situated within The Octagon, right in the heart of Dunedin, Bacchus Wine Bar & Restaurant is one of the longest running and most respected venues in the area. Having recently celebrated 21 years in business, it certainly knows what's what and is a favoured spot for locals and visitors alike.

Occupying one of Dunedin's oldest buildings, dating back to 1888, Bachhus exudes an elegant and classic vibe which is mirrored in the menu. All the heart-warming favourites are on offer — think braised beef cheek, slow-cooked pork belly and lamb rump — and having been awarded the NZ Beef and Lamb Hallmark of Excellence for the past 15 years, you know that meat is good.

The wine list features some of the finest reserves from New Zealand, Australia, France and Italy. There's also a good list of single malt whiskies if that's your cup of tea, so to speak. Be sure to save room for dessert, the rhubarb creme brulee is a highlight. Or, if sweets aren't your thing, opt for a selection of local Evansdale cheese. For $20, you'll get three types of cheese — bay blue, farmhouse brie and komene kass — as well as sticky quince paste. Yes, please.
