Imagine following a rainbow of coloured lines that race beneath your peddles, the wheels of your bike creating sister lines as you swerve while leaving your own mark. Sound fun? Well check out Contrail, a recently developed device that attaches to your back wheel. Once your wheel begins to move a coloured stream of chalk-like substance covers the tyre and "turns your bike into a paintbrush," explains co-creator Pepin Gelardi. Other than brightening up the roads, it is a concept developed to encourage cycling as well as increase bike awareness on the roads. After conducting a survey on people who were hesitant to jump on a bike, Gelardi found the number-one reason for this was because "people felt unsafe and outnumbered by cars." When traveling in groups, the bright trail also acts as a guide for those who may have fallen behind or strayed from the group. The Brooklyn-based creator explains that as more cyclists using Contrail follow the line the clearer it eventually becomes, while the non-toxic substance gives cycling a fun visual element that is easily washed away by the rain. In order to make this product a reality Studio Gerladi need to raise USD$10,000. Through fundraising platform Kickstarter they’ve already managed to raise $5,264 yet have a mere 16 days left to obtain the remainder. If they are unsuccessful the project will not go ahead. You can support Contrail by visiting Kickstarter. Back in April 2010 guerilla artists led a similar concept at a busy intersection in Berlin where tins of coloured paint were poured in front of cars sitting at red lights. When the lights turned green the road was transformed into a canvas coated in colours normally seen in an ice-cream parlour.
