Central to any Jimmy D collection is a multitude of references, contrasts and ideas joined together in a unique stream-of-consciousness code.

Rising Sun, Melting Moon, Jimmy D’s new range for summer 2012/13 is no different and finds designer James Dobson submerged in tales of the City Tokyo- from it’s sweet Hello Kitty Kawaii cuteness to the seedy underground clubs in the red light Kabukicho district.

An impressive installation showcased the collections neon twee-ness belied with darker duality pieces in a whacky-cool set up while guests noshed on bright-iced Dunkin’ Donuts. Completing the drama of this ‘pick ’n’ mix’ scenario was X-shaped panels and strapping, knot detail, moody midnight blue draping and a kinky use of plastic.

With the modern ease of active wear being another familiar Jimmy D riff, sporty shapes in athletic grey marle and black mesh are predominate features, complete with a distinctive Araki 666 print, the font based on the original Tokyo Giants baseball team shirts.

Again this season, Jimmy D also continues his collaboration with Auckland artist Andrew McLeod, with the digital montage ‘Marble Reality’ screen printed onto tee shirting and digitally printed onto a silk crepe de chine tee.
