Overview
With the evidence of limited COVID-19 community transmission, Auckland is now under Alert Level 3 lockdown for at least three days. The rest of New Zealand stands at Alert Level 2. The Ministry of Health has now released information on the use of face masks in the community, with Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield and Chief Science Advisor Dr Ian Town recommending that all households should be prepared by having a supply of masks for each household member.
Face masks can be either fabric reusable (washable), or a single use disposable face mask. The latter can be purchased online, from supermarkets, hardware stores or pharmacies — although we recommend you call ahead — or you can make your own fabric reusable face masks. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has also strongly encouraged the use of face coverings and advised that DIY interpretations such as a bandana or scarf can also be used if you do not have a mask. The Ministry also recommends approximately four fabric reusable face masks per family member.
Here are some local designers to check out if you're masking up.
JULIETTE HOGAN
Juliette Hogan's reusable fabric face masks are 100 percent cotton and have ties for around the ears. The cloth face masks are available in Dalmation Silk, Leo Cotton and Pastel Garden Cotton prints. They are not medical grade.
OUR TAIAO
These Māori pattern reusable face masks are made with three layers of cotton. Our Taiao says they are not medical grade or a silver bullet but a precautionary measure. The company is now sold out, but is hoping to reopen orders next week.
JOJO ROSS
Auckland-based designer Jojo Ross also has three colour ways of reusable masks available. Each mask is made from a double layer of lightweight fabric with elastic ties. The masks are not medical grade and can be picked up for $20 each with $5 nationwide shipping.
RUBY
These reusable masks have been made from offcuts from both Ruby and Liam collections. They are composed of cotton and linen for ultimate breathability. The masks are not medical grade.
HILLS HATS
Wellington's Hills Hats moved from headwear to facewear during the country's first lockdown. The reusable coverings are made to match with the company's New Zealand-made hats. Each mask is constructed with multiple layers including an interchangeable non-woven material filter. The online store will be restocked this weekend.
ECOMOON
Ecomoon has a range of cotton and flannel masks in a variety of designs for both adults and kids. The company also takes custom orders. The masks are not medical grade and come with ear elastics.
UNTOUCHED WORLD
Untouched World's Ecoprotect face masks are machine washable and sterilised in an autoclave. The label has come up with a few options for different levels of protection, from simple surgical-style pleat mask to one packing a disposable filter. The company expects to have more stock by the end of the week.
EARTH SEA SKY
Outdoor clothing experts Earth Sea Sky sell mask packs with disposable Helix filters for additional protection. The masks are washable and easy breathing. You can also pick up a DIY mask with everything you need it to make one yourself.
