Overview
Nestled in the coastal town of Mount Maunganui is Kayu Studio, a new bricks and mortar furniture store bringing a slice of Bali to the Bay of Plenty region. The zen–like space is the brainchild of Mount Maunganui local James Mitchell, who learned all there is to know about quality, reasonably priced furniture during his time in Bali, where he honed his skills in the world of interiors.
For Mitchell, furniture provides more than just a place to take a load off. Kayu Studio works to engage all your senses with its pieces, from sound, smell, touch and taste, as well as being visually appealing. The brand creates a huge range of interiors, from mirrors, rugs and pet accessories, to various furniture essentials, such as bed–side tables and comfy lounge suites.
All of Kayu's pieces are made using fair trade practices, with the materials and backstory of each piece taken into consideration before creating the design.
Not only will customers be able to browse Kayu's furniture in the new showroom, customers will be able to try before they buy thanks to the opening of Kayu Casa — an Airbnb property decked out in the studio's best designs. The space is filled with considered touches to provide the guest with a zen–like stay, complete with touches of Mitchell's beloved Bali.
The apartment features an open plan lounge and dining area, which is filled with natural light, as well as a master bedroom equipped with an ensuite and laundry facilities. Almost all of the furniture found in Kayu Casa is available for purchase from the showroom right next door.
Kayu Casa is located in the town's centre with Mount Maunganui beach only a 15-minute walk away.
Kayu Studio and Kayu Casa can be found at 13 Totara Street, Mount Maunganui. Kayu Casa can be booked through the apartment's Airbnb listing. To see more of Kayu Studio's designs, head to its website.
