Overview

'A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy?' asked Albert Einstein. A groundbreaking Theory of Relativity? Or maybe just a new app?

Mood Tuner is marketing itself as a 'life-coach/guru/therapist in your pocket'. Basically, it's all about turning that frown upside-down. If you find yourself at the bottom of the emotional abyss and can't remember where you put the tools you need to tunnel your way out, this app hopes to jolt your memory with a series of 'mindfulness exercises'.

Eight options, sorted into three groups, comprise the interface. The 'Everyday Emotional Emergencies' section features just one bright, red button, labelled 'Quick Help'; the 'General Happiness and Well-being' category features four buttons, titled 'Joy', 'Energy', 'Self-love' and 'Abundance'; and the 'Achieve Your Goals' section offers three buttons, named 'Transform Obstacles', 'Live Your Vision' and 'Make It Happen'.

Each option takes the user on an emotional journey by asking a series of questions designed to inspire positive thinking and harness helpful mental energy. The thinking behind the app is that, even though we might find tranquility in yoga classes, release our inner demons in a therapy session or find ourselves electrified at a self-motivation seminar, it's not so easy to make healthy mental processes part of our daily routine.

Creator Kate Howe is promoting Mood Tuner through a series of fun videos with names like 'If your journal is the only one who knows about your big plans . . . ' and 'In case you forget the ATM has nothing to tell you about abundance . . . ' $1.99 will buy you a download via the app store.
