With retina-display, an abundance of megapixels and five-element lenses, smartphone cameras are constantly on the improve. However, one problem remains: how to take decent shots when the light is low?

The brains behind the new 'iblazr' claim to have come up with a solution. They've developed the world's 'first universal flash for smartphones and tablets'. Although its release date is yet to be revealed, the device promises enough illumination to give a smartphone a professional edge, even in the most nocturnal of circumstances.

Compatible with both iPhone and Android, the iblazr LED flash is just 10mm thick. So, it's a rather aesthetically satisfying extension to any slimline mobile. A 3.5mm jack provides a universal connection and an independent battery prevents energy drain.

For its size, the LED is impressively efficient. In video mode, 100 lux is provided (that's seven times that enabled by an iPhone), and this increases to 180 lux in flash mode (four times that facilitated by an iPhone). Not only is the iblazr flash good for photography, it can also be used to brighten up video calls.

In the run-up to the announcement of pre-orders becoming available, the iblazr team has been busy displaying its potential via various social networks, including Facebook.
