Overview

At the height of Beatlemania in 1964 the fab four put down their instruments and stepped in front of the lens for a black-and-white comedy.

Written by Alun Owen and directed by Richard Lester, A Hard Day's Night portrays several chaotic days in the lives of John, Paul, George and Ringo as they make their way from their home town of Liverpool to London for a televised concert. On route they are constantly on the run from a horde of fans and must rescue Paul's grandfather from various misadventures, in between tracking down Ringo before they take the stage.

Credited as being one of the most influential musical films of all time, it inspired numerous spy films, as well as the Monkees' television show and music videos.

2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the first release of A Hard Day’s Night, and to mark the occasion a digitally restored version will screen at the NZ International Film Festival.

A Hard Day's Night is screening at The Civic on Friday April 17 at 2:15pm and Sunday April 19 at 4pm.
