Overview

For two nights every year, Western Park in Ponsonby gets transformed into one of the most awe-inspiring art exhibitions you could imagine. At the risk of sounding like a cliche over-sell, it really is an event you shouldn't miss; there's just something a little bit magical and perhaps nostalgic about a night wander surrounded by creature-like neon art displays.

Art in the Dark is based on the idea of celebrating artistic talent within the local community. This year the theme was based around sustainability and eco-friendliness. This has seen many of the artworks using solar power or being made from recycled materials and an inevitable injection of kiwi ingenuity.

A lot of the art works on display are interactive, so along with your woolies and your torch, make sure you come prepared to get involved. There are performances scheduled for both nights and short film screenings, so it's best to allow a couple of hours to have a real mooch around and see all that is on display.

There won't be any food sold at the event, so make an evening of it and slot in a Ponsonby dinner before you head along.

Definitely something different to kickstart your weekend and tick the box for your colourful culture fix for the week.
