Auckland Fringe Festival

The magic of Fringe Festivals is that anyone can have an idea, register a show and make it happen. There’s no curator, no set genres and shows can happen anywhere within the boundaries of Auckland. Shows have occured in a paddock in Pakiri, a central city elevator and even at the Parnell Baths.

Overview

Following a record-breaking sophomore outing in 2011, Auckland Fringe will hit the city once again from Friday, February 15 to Sunday, March 10, 2013.

An open access arts festival where anything can happen, Auckland Fringe was born in 2009 and by 2011 had 1296 people involved in 99 shows and an audience of 51,888. The festival aims to provide a platform for artists to present their work in an environment of artistic freedom and to enable audience access to eclectic arts experiences. The magic of Fringe Festivals is that anyone can have an idea, register a show and make it happen. There’s no curator, no set genres and shows can happen anywhere within the boundaries of Auckland. Shows have occured in a paddock in Pakiri, a central city elevator and at Parnell Baths, like 2011’s sell-out synchronized swimming show, Wet Hot Beauties (which returns this year as Swan Song).

Auckland Fringe is closely connected with Wellington, Dunedin and Hamilton Fringe Festivals and is part of an ever growing World Fringe movement.
