Overview

Founded in Zurich, Switzerland by a blind clergyman, the global phenomenon of dining in complete darkness can now be experienced in restaurants across the world. Last appearing in Auckland as part of Restaurant Month, the unique sensory experience will come to Auckland once again this March courtesy of French organisation Dans le Noir (In the Dark). The event will take place from March 24, 2017 at Rydges Auckland.

As well as letting kitchen staff take a breather from pristine plate presentation, the act of dining with the absence of sight awakens senses and enables guests to completely re-evaluate their perception of taste and smell. It eradicates shyness and preconceptions, and fosters natural communication—which tends to becomes more intense, authentic and spontaneous.

In each 60 seat sitting, diners will experience cuisine adapted to total darkness over three courses, matched wines and surprise cocktails. The Blind Foundation will work as waitstaff and guides during the experience, effectively working as the eyes in the process. Thankfully, the lights will still be on in the kitchen.
