Doc Edge at The Civic

Overview

The Documentary Edge Festival has been bringing the very best documentaries from across the globe to New Zealand since 2005. Due to the country's COVID-19 gathering and physical distancing restrictions, the festival moved online for the first time in 2020. This month, Doc Edge returns with four new films taking over the big screen at The Civic.

The lineup includes a sneak peek of new Kiwi doco High Tide Don't Hide, which weaves together the stories of five teens as they rally against anxiety, climate denial and white privilege to pull together a record-setting strike in Aotearoa.

Further New Zealand premieres selected include The Man on the Island about 77-year-old Colin McLaren who lives on a remote Hauraki Gulf island, and 2020 Sundance award-winner The Painter and the Thief by Norwegian director Benjamin Ree. The film follows the unlikely relationship of Czech artist Barbora Kysilkova and the thief who stole her paintings.

Emmy Award-winning doco The Apollo completes the quadruple bill and will screen for free. The film chronicles the history of New York's famous Apollo Theatre, renowned for its influence on pop culture and for launching the careers of artists from Louis Armstrong to Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye.
