Expert Sessions: Wild About Nature

Overview

On Tuesday July 8 a panel of top photographers will be reflecting on this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. Host Kennedy Warne is the co-founding editor of New Zealand Geographic magazine. He has also written for National Geographic, Smithsonian, and the Canadian Geographic.

Speaking at the event will be New Zealand photographer Rod Morris, and the exhibition's grand title winner Greg du Toit (via Skype). Before becoming a professional wildlife photographer, du Toit was a nature conservationist and wilderness guide. His days spent stalking animals with tourists proved to be invaluable experience in capturing his winning work the Essence of Elephants.

The three photographers will discuss the images from the exhibition, as well as the influence of photography as an instrument for environmental and social change.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is currently on loan from the Natural History Museum in London, showing at the Auckland Museum from April 25 until August 3. The Natural History Museum and BBC Worldwide co-owned exhibition features 100 wildlife photographs - the subject matter ranging from animal behaviour to landscapes. Now in its 49th year, the annual international competition drew 43,000 entries from more than 98 countries in the world, with the finalists chosen based on creativity, artistry and technical complexity.
