Overview

K'Rd institution First Thursdays is teaming up with Auckland Transport to bring you Open Streets. For one day only, everyone's favourite strip will be closed to any form of transport with a motor and will be free for all to roam.

That's right, whether you go by bike or skateboard, or prefer to have two feet firmly planted on the ground, you'll be able to stroll (or ride) at your own pace all the way from Upper Queen to Ponsonby Road. Yep, right in the middle of the street.

Of course, hanging out in the middle of the street is fun and all, but it wouldn't be a street party without street performers, artist installations and live music to keep you entertained. There's also nothing better than hitting the markets on a Sunday, spotting a bargain and finding some take-home treasures. I'd suggest you start saving your pennies, this Sunday there'll be not one, but two markets on the strip. Out on the street will be the Twice as Nice Markets and everyone's favourite dive bar Whammy will be hosting a makers market and vegan food pop-up down in St Kevin's Arcade.

Karangahape Road is legendary; home to some of Auckland's most eccentric personalities, creatives and foodies, it's vibrant at all times of the day and night. With all of its colour and character, I doubt you'd be able to think of a better setting for a family-friendly street party.
