Overview
They're indubitably one of the best bands in the world to see live. For those of you who missed their iconic Laneway 2015 set, Future Islands is coming back to our shores in the midst of a gruelling worldwide tour to play The Powerstation in early December.
Future Islands have been around for five albums now — finding their roots in a performance art band when a few of the early members were in art school. Their onstage atmosphere is electric. Post-wave sounds (new wave and post punk, if you were wondering), reminiscent of A-Ha and New Order make every song an excuse to dance. Frontman Samuel T Herring sets the energy — he's an exuberant performer with an iconic dance style and inimitable voice. Reinke's edema (a voice condition) means that the notes he can't hit, he growls. It makes for a captivating set.
Their last Seasons tour was a worldwide hit — their latest album The Far Field will form the bulk of their set list for this tour. The songs are a bit more introspective, a bit more reflective. A breakup for Herring has resulted in songs like 'Time on Her Side' and 'Ran', melancholic and a bit sad but ultimately a rallying cry for recovery.
