The New Zealand International Comedy Festival reliantly showcases comedians from both near and afar in a bid to entertain audiences across the country. 2016's lineup features an exceptional selection of veteran comics seasoned in cracking jokes. With two decades of experience, hailing from London, George Egg is one comedian who is approaching the comedy festival a little differently this year with his show Anarchist Cook. His contribution to the festival this year can unquestionably be labelled as one of a kind as George Egg literally mixes up comedy and cooking.
Showing until May 14 at the Herald Theatre, George demonstrates how he employs the generic equipment hotel rooms are stocked with to cook. With an ironing board as a bench, an upside-down tray as a cutting board and a kettle as the equivalent of boiling water in a pot George takes audiences through an entrée, main course and dessert using only items from a standard hotel room and food from the supermarket.
The hour-long show is interesting and by all means a mix of innovation and stand-up. With Mother's Day just around the corner this show would be ideal to bond over with mum as the sheer originality, ingenious cooking and fascinating approach to a festival comedy show is something easily bonded over. With an outcome that results in surprisingly good food and recipe cards available to buy at the end, you can't help but walk away intrigued by the ideas bought to life on cooking in a hotel room… so much so you might even be tempted to try a few of the tricks at home yourself.
