Overview

The German Film Festival returns to New Zealand for its tenth year this month with screenings in Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch, New Plymouth and Nelson. The best part is that admission is absolutely free.

Presented by the Goethe-Institut, across five days the festival will showcase the newest movies spanning Europe's DACH region — namely Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

3 Days in Quiberon is a black and white recreation of the final interview with famous actress Romy Schneider in a rehab clinic; The Nights Of All Nights is a lighthearted documentary that reveals the secrets of love through couples who have just celebrated 60 years of marriage; As We Were Dreaming recounts the life of five teens before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall; Magical Mystery is a techno-reinforced road movie across Germany; Arthur & Claire is sharp-tongued tragicomedy; and Pure Charcoal is a documentary outlining the archaic world of charcoal burning. The German Film Festival will take place at Academy Cinemas from 4-9 September. Free tickets are only available on the day of the screening.
