Overview

The German Film Festival returns to New Zealand for its 11th year this September with screenings in Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch, New Plymouth and Nelson — and the best part is that admission is absolutely free.

Presented by the Goethe-Institut, across four days the festival will showcase the newest movies spanning Europe's DACH region — namely Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Six films make up this year's lineuphighlights include All About Me, a dramatised origin story of one of Germany's most beloved contemporary comedians; Swimming, a coming of age story set in the world of phone bullying; The Border Fence, a documentary exploring the never-erected fence intended to stop refugees at Brenner Pass; and Gundermann, a real life story about a digger driver who made a name for himself as a singer-songwriter in former East Germany. The German Film Festival will take place at Academy Cinemas from 12–15 September. Festival entry is free and tickets can be picked up on the day for screenings on that day only.
