Overview

The latest work from acclaimed writer Victor Roger (Black Faggot, At The Wake) follows the true story of Shalimar Seiuli, a Samoan fa’afafine prostitute who was picked up by comedian Eddie Murphy on Santa Monica Boulevard in 1997.

After being pulled over by Poilce and claiming the ride was just a kind gesture, Murphy and Seiuli were caught up in a media storm across the US. In her quick rise to fame, Seiuli was found dead one year later.

The Girl on a Corner follows Shalimar as she tells her story and offer some variations on what may or may not have happened. The show was directed by Anapela Polataivao and Vela Manusaute and stars Amanaki Prescott, Taufa Fisiinaua, Gabriel Halatoa, Hans Masoe, Aleni Tufuga, Joanna Toloa and Sandy Vukalokalo.

The Girl on a Corner forms part of this year's Auckland Fringe Festival, which plays out across the city from February 9 until March 1.
