There's no need to make the two-hour commute to Waitomo to catch a glimpse of glowworms in their natural habitat — though a boat ride through the twinkling grotto should definitely be on your list of attractions. Manurewa's Totara Park is one of the few places to see the luminescent creatures in Auckland.

This October, Auckland Council's outdoor recreation initiative Out and About is hosting a series of free glowworm tours though the gardens. Each guided tour on October 1, 2, 8 and 9 will run for one hour. Keen animal spotters may also see eels, rabbits and birds on the tour.

Bookings are essential and can be made by emailing Gabrielle from Out and About with your preferred date, a backup date, and the number of adults and children attending.
