Overview

When you think of street food in the traditional sense, it's easy to envisage over-flowing rubbish bins with an excessive amount of plastic spoons, food scraps and single-use containers. This isn't the case with the Green Bay Street Food festival; event organisers have successfully created a food fair which is entirely clean, green and waste-free.

On Friday 30 March, beloved Auckland food trucks will be parking up for the monthly special to celebrate the end of daylight savings.

Green Bay Street Food began in January 2016 when a local West Auckland resident decided there was a need for a place where people can relax and enjoy good food made by local purveyors in a shared space. It's a great meeting spot for friends and families to gather and enjoy dinner together, and your vegan sibling can sit next to your carnivore aunt, and both have their cravings met from the vast selection of tasty food trucks on offer.

Our favourite (and the local's pick) is Mama Tahina who serve tasty Mediterranean food, including Moroccan couscous cakes, chimichuri, beet hummus and vegan buddha bowls.

If you have a hankering for a saucy, too-large-for-your-mouth vegan burger, then you'll be pleased to hear that Wise Boys Burgers will be serving their popular plant-based burgers. It's hard to pin these guys down, but when we do it's worth committing to a 40-minute drive across town to indulge in their tasty offerings.

For dumpling lovers, The Rolling Pin have you covered with a selection of pork and vegetable dumplings, as well as some quirky edible pot plants, which are brand new to their menu. Pork 'N' Beans will be treating meat lovers to slow-roasted pulled pork, pork belly and a classic mac 'n' cheese, which always sells out ten times quicker than it takes to cook. For dessert, The Fab Truck will be making their classic sweet and savoury crepes and galettes, and Mister Gelato has some special flavours lined up for ice cream fiends to embrace the warmer weather.

The best part is that all vendors must have compostable packaging — all packaging and food scraps are composted by We Compost.

Green Bay Street Food is a great way to celebrate the beginning of spring by enjoying seasonal kai and supporting waste-free communities.
