Overview

Hatenkohro are a Japanese performance group that are making their way to New Zealand for Splore. And, luckily for anyone not attending the music festival, they're also performing at the Ellen Melville Centre on February 19.

A Hatenkohro show is a unique experience. It brings together classical Japanese performance with contemporary dance and stage combat, all against the backdrop of their Heavy Metal Circus Orchestra.

Weeds Cart, the New Zealand artist, has created an experimental social sculpture to go along with the show, while chef Nina Yanagisawa will create traditional Japanese nigiri from the unexpected ingredient of weeds for attendees to share.

Continuing in the trend of NZ and Japanese artists collaborating, artist Niroko Collins, Unitec international design students and Hills Hats, have created the costumes for the event, upcycling kimonos for fantastical outfits.

Supported by the Auckland Council, the event is free entry and kicks off at 6pm. The members of the group will be available after the show for a meet and greet.
