Overview

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Gaylene Preston will be curating a special ANZAC tribute exhibition, Illuminate 2014 - Duty and Adventure, in honour of the fallen Anzac soldiers.

Wellington-based Preston has a strong affiliation with the Wars, having  directed and produced two war-focused documentaries in the past - namely War Stories, which documents the lives of seven widows and wives of WWII; and Home by Christmas, which shows Preston's own father's perspective and recollections of the same war.

16, 697 New Zealanders were killed during the first World War (58% of the men who were sent to fight), while 11,625 were killed during the second World War. The official Anzac Day date, the 25th of April, marks the landing of Australians and New Zealanders on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915. Anzac Day has been observed since 1916.

The Illuminate 2014 exhibition will feature archival footage, including some newly discovered and unreleased WWI footage. The outdoor screening will be accompanied by a soundtrack commissioned for the occasion.

Illuminate 2014 will be screening outside the Museum from Tuesday 22 to Thursday 24 April, from sunset until 10pm.
