It turns out there is such a thing as a free lunch.

Overview

You probably know North Island town Pukekohe for its motorsports and horse racing, but you might not have expected it to be posed as the North Island's next gastronomy capital. But plans are underway to make this picturesque spot north of Auckland a gourmet food lover's destination — with a massive indoor food market and laneway dining district proposed by the council.

To give locals a taste of what will hopefully be on offer in the next few years, the local council have organised for a Kai Franklin food truck to set up shop in Pukekohe's Town Square this Saturday, August 27.

The menu has been created by talented chef Holly Jansen using locally grown produce harvested from the farms in the wider Franklin district. On the menu is a Wild Fermentary kimchi and cheese toastie, bowls of Black Pond Farm organic beef pho with greens, rice noodles and beef broth and a honey and brown butter cookie slab with pistachio and almond praline cream.

And the best part? It's all completely, totally free.

Head along to grab some lunch and hear from the council's project team about the plan for the town — after all, it's always better to have a chat with a cookie in hand.
