Find out what your type is.

Overview

If you thought your your handwriting lessons peaked in your new entrance primary school class when you learnt to do those cool superman 'S' things, Gemma O'Brien has news for you. Aussie-based, law school drop out, fine arts graduate with self-professed obsession with typography, Gemma O'Brien is the mastermind behind the lettering blog For the Love of Type.

When O'Brien was just 21, she posted a video to her blog in which she covered her own body in hand lettering, which caught the eye of Jurgen Siebert, typography expert of Font Shop in Germany, and was invited to speak at the 2009 Typo Berlin conference.

She has been going from strength to strength since, with massive clients Woolworths, Vodafone, The New York Times and Smirnoff amongst her mix of employers. On top of her typography, Gemma has dabbled in art direction for motion graphics in commercials, as well as gallery show exhibitions featuring her craft. Most recently, Gemma was a Semi-Permanent spokesperson where she wowed audiences with her typographical talent.

If you're interested in typography, the subject which the late Steve Jobs attributes with Apple's initial design-based success, Gemma is talking hand-lettering, writing and typography, and taking some calligraphy exercises, as well as conceptualising, drawing and refining your lettering techniques at Spark Lab on July 11.

Who better to learn from than a girl who's lettering travelled 400km on the travelling crate of Kitoto, the giraffe and sweetheart of Taronga Zoo?

RSVP with your ticket to Semi-Permanent, or enter the draw to attend the workshop.
