Overview
Any singer who can make the lyrics "your sh*tty f*cking attitude" sound smooth, is definitely doing something right. I'd even go so far as saying I probably wouldn't mind being broken up with by someone singing me Just Ain't Gonna Work Out. Mayer Hawthorne sure has smooth down pat.
Drawing his influence from legends such as Barry White, Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield, Hawthorne's latest album epitomises classic soul. After headlining at the last Splore Festival, it's a guarantee his show at The Powerstation won't be one to turn your nose up to. And despite the dizzying air play his debut single The Walk has been receiving, it's still a pleasingly addictive tune.
Here's a little information nugget on M-dawg to tuck away for your next trivia night. He actually used that age old trick of combining your middle name and your street name in order to come up with his stage alias. His real name is Andrew Cohen. Who knew?
Regardless, Andy or Mayer, the guy's a musical legend. His new album has a real vintage feel; each song sounding as though it was recorded pre 1980. In true Hawthorne style, the orchestral pop and funky bass lines will having you smooth-grooving (yes, that's a legit d-floor move, you know you've done it) and picturing yourself cruising someplace cool on a yacht.
Hoo hoo doo-wop. See you there.
