Mexfestival 2019
Celebrate one of the world's most fascinating cultures at this two-day fiesta.
Overview
For the fourth year running the country's biggest celebration of Mexican culture will be held in Auckland. Taking over ASB Showgrounds from 9–10 November, Mexfestival marks the arrival of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) — the Central American holiday that honours those who have passed. This year the festival will also honour Quetzalcóatl, the Aztec feathered god of learning, writing and books.
All things Mexican will be on offer at the day-long event, with a particular focus on the wild and rich Mayan culture. That means interactive theatre, mariachi bands, mechanical bull riding, folklore dance, tequila drinking, piñata smashing, and a glorious selection of authentic food. Come with an empty stomach to devour all of the good stuff: tacos, tortas, tostadas and the odd burrito for good measure.
Workshops are a key part of the festival — attendees will have the opportunity to make authentic tortillas, learn the traditional game of loteria, and enter a salsa making contest.
Mexfestival 2019 will take place from 12pm to 8pm on Saturday, 9 November and 10am to 5pm on Sunday, 10 November.
