Movies in Parks 2023
The free outdoor screenings of classic family flicks and newly released blockbusters are coming back for summer.
Overview
Auckland's summer entices us outdoors for many of our daily activities including painting classes, yoga sessions and, come January, our movie-watching habits. Auckland Council's free Movies in Parks sessions are making their return in January 2023 so you can catch a family flick or a newly released blockbuster under the stars.
The free outdoor cinema sessions are a staple on the Auckland summer calendar and this year the six-week run will be no different. Taking place after sunset in various parks and green spaces across the city, the lineup includes family-frindly flicks for the young at heart like Minions: Rise of Gru, Lightyear, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and our personal throwback fave, Finding Nemo. You can also sing along to viewing sessions of The Greatest Showman and Moana (in Te Reo Māori), or see the thrilling action of Top Gun: Maverick.
Start times will of course vary depending on sunsets but with plenty of pre-show entertainment there is no excuse not to come early and make a full evening of it — you can bring a full picnic from home (with no ushers glaring at your non-cinema purchased goods) or grab a bite from one of the delicious food trucks that will be operating at each event.
So pack up your flat or the family, your picnic blanket and some warm clothes for when the sun goes down and enjoy an evening of free entertainment.
