Overview

Get your tissues ready 'cause here comes the orchestral world's answer to The Notebook. Prepare to have your heartstrings thoroughly tugged by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra as they perform Pathétique. Singaporean maestro Darrell Ang leads the orchestra through a program of three mesmerizing pieces from symphonic greats Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and rising star David Grahame Taylor.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky's astonishing Symphony No.6 in B minor contains all the drama, rage and distinct brand of melancholy the Russian master has become known for. Antonín Dvořák's Cello concerto in B minor is the ideal accompaniment, with luxurious string textures and soaring melodies being the order of the day. The NZSO will be joined by Armenian cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan, who has been celebrated for his expressive and truly virtuosic playing.

New Zealand composer David Grahame Taylor continues the melancholy with Embiois, a stunning new piece that explores sonorous strings and densely layered harmonies. Winner of the Orchestra Choice Award at the 2013 New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Todd Young Composer Awards, Taylor is one to watch.

If you're craving some aural catharsis or you just want a change from sticky bar floors, get your ticket to the NZSO this Saturday 27 May at the Great Hall.
