Overview
No, it's not a glitch in the matrix and no, you're not having a deja vu. After a sweet gig on Friday, Onra decided he loves us so much that he's decided to kick about in Auckland for another week. If that's not enough to feel a bit chuffed about, while he's at it he's fixing up another night of delcious beats this Wednesday at Rakinos, for free.
Not mad about it at all.
For those who are thinking 'oh [drat], I wish I'd gone to that gig', this is your chance. If you need a quick recap on the radness of Onra that we talked about last week, read on for the general dilly..
Based in Paris, Onra's background is mainly hip-hop, but he draws inspiration from other genres including soul, funk, jazz, reggae, boogie, modern soul, R'n'B, dub, World and prog rock. He first appeared on the collab-album Tribute in 2006 with friend and French producer Quetzal, with a sound that quickly scaled the underground hip-hop scene.
Around the same time he began collaboration with Byron The Aquarius, an American keyboard player from Alabama. Together they released The Big Payback in 2007 . This project featured an eclectic mix of influences including futuristic hip-hop, nu-soul and broken beat.
It's not every day that an international musical talent like Onra crosses the globe to our shores, and to have him stick around and throw another gig is the universe telling you that you really ought to go see this chap. Get along to Rakinos this Wednesday for what will be a certifiably top level night.
