Love, adventure, incest, prostitutes and a storm at sea. No, it’s not the Wolf of Wall Street, it’s Pericles, Prince of Tyre, one of the lesser known yet most successful works of William Shakespeare.
Pericles, Prince of Tyre is the tragic tale of a king and his daughters. It follows a young prince shipwrecked, running from death, and fighting for the love of his princess, who he may lose on the very sea that has marooned him. His triumphs and miseries are expressed in some of Shakespeare’s most moving and eloquent language.
This University of Auckland Summer Shakespeare production embraces the simplicity of this tale of voyages, piracy, death-defying escapes, captivity and family lost and found.
Pimps and madams, denizens of the brothel in which the play’s young heroine finds herself trapped, will frequent the arena, while intermission gives budding sporty types a chance to play cricket with three cheeky fishermen. Get ready for an invigorating evening of modern Shakespeare.
Leading in song and story, a live band will play music, covering the likes of The Black Keys, Macklemore and The White Stripes.
