Overview
With cutting edge technology continuing to expand, enhance and thrill the boundaries of which we live in, the music world is no exception to pioneering ideas and inventions breaking limitations. There's a new robot on the block that brings together science and the arts, two worlds which at times are known to bare likeness. Kiwi engineer James McVay has designed and made the robot MechBass, a multi-stringed modular robotic bass guitar. MechBass took over 1000 hours to assemble and was interestingly created by another ground-breaking technology, 3D printing.
On Thursday 14 April, in an all time world first, the musical collaboration of human and robot will take the stage and perform at Auckland's Q Theatre in Plot Twist. After sparking global attention, the hysteria of MechBass intrigued many and the internet phenomenon will take to its first concert joined by a selection of special guests and talented instrumentalists.
Joining MechBass will be internationally acclaimed guitarist Cheryl Grice, the Czech Republic's Peter Tomek, pianist, composer and electric guitar maestro Sean Clancy and Sam Holdon, the drummer for indie band Skinny Hobos. The musicians will cover a variety of blues, classical and jazz numbers with some special drum solos too. Plot Twist is produced by Dusk, a new design collective passionate about the creation of technological innovation and interdisciplinary collaborations. The team is made up on architects, industrial designers, mechatronic engineers and computer scientists to create holistically and integrated systems. We can't wait to see Plot Twist and what they put together next.
