Overview

Nothing says classic Kiwiana like a woodchopping carnival. Get a taste of the great Aotearoa at Puhoi's annual axe-flinging event on Saturday, January 11 from 9am–8pm.

Hosted by the Puhoi Axemen Club, the Puhoi Woodchopping Carnival, which is the largest wood chopping event on the Northland calendar, will see axemen and axewomen arriving from around New Zealand and Australia to partake in some healthy competition.

Outside the Puhoi Pub you'll find the axemen games as well as beer and snacks. There will also be merchandise and raffles. Last year the carnival included different events such as underhand chopping, standing chopping, single and double hand sawing, axe throwing and the 'jigger board', which sees the axemen cutting their way down from the top of a stand-in tree.

There are rounds for individuals as well as teams, with the Puhoi team against visitors often a crowd favourite. The event is hosted in association with The Puhoi Hotel and Stables and is free to enter.
