Reflect – Move Towards the Light

A kaleidoscopic underwater dance and a galleon ship caught in an ocean storm will form part of an illuminated journey of discovery along Auckland’s inner city waterfront this weekend.

In an innovative initiative for the area, a series of large scale video projections including light sculptures and laser projections will appear in a number of locations between Britomart in the east and Silo Park in Wynyard Quarter.

The curative inspiration for the project called, Reflect comes from the themes of the Maori New Year festival, Matariki and contributing artists include the Dub Module, Rachael Rakena and Mexican artist Hector Zamora.

The initiative is supported by a collaboration of waterfront stakeholders that include Britomart, Ports of Auckland and Council organisation Waterfront Auckland.

Project coordinator Simon van Praag says the intentional low level activity has been created in a way to produce a sense of intrigue. “Thanks to a renewed focus on urban design aesthetic and heritage preservation, the landscape of downtown Auckland and the waterfront in particular is rapidly becoming an engaging and visually interesting environment to be in.”

“To capitalise on this and add to the vibrancy of the space over the winter months, we wanted to create a sense of discovery for passersby – one that would delight the public and many visitors to the area and encourage them to branch out along the full axis of the waterfront and enjoy the spaces on offer.”

Work by more than 15 artists feature in the display that will run Thursday 26 July - Saturday 28 July 2012 .
