Overview

The best-ever shark thriller is coming to Silo Cinema.

Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley's novel of the same name, Jaws tells the story of a giant man-eating Great White shark that terrorises beach-goers at summer resort town Amity Island. The savage attacks prompt the local police chief to take things into his own hands, with the help of a marine biologist and a professional shark hunter.

Considering the straightforward premise, the film had a troubled production, guided by consistent seasickness, an overshot budget and late delivery; disgruntled crew members gave the film the nickname "Flaws". Due to a series of shonky mechanical sharks, Spielberg also decided to mostly suggest the animal's presence; instead he employed the threatening and now infamous score created by composer John Williams.

Upon release Jaws became the highest-grossing film in history at the time, before being knocked out of the water by Star Wars two years later. It won several awards including three Academy Awards, a Grammy, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.

As well as motivating three sequels and a plentiful number of ripoffs, the film has inspired two musical adaptations: JAWS The Musical!, and Giant Killer Shark: The Musical, three video games, and a slot machine.

Jaws will serve as the final film screening for the 2014/15 Silo Cinema season. It will be bordered by the Silo Markets, boasting food, drink, art, accessories, clothing, crafts and more.
