Silo Park

Wynyard Quarter, Jellicoe Street, Auckland

Whoever discovered that the silos at Wynyard Quarter were good for things other than bulk petro-chemical storage should be applauded. Thanks to some thinking outside the box – or in this case, the cylinder – Aucklanders have been enjoying the free outdoor Silo Cinema for the past five years.

Films will be projected onto the side of Silo 7 every Friday night across December and January, and cult classic When Harry Met Sally is second in the programme. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal star in Rob Reiner's 80s rom-com, most famous for its scene where Ryan's character really enjoys a meal in a Manhattan diner.

The film's soundtrack will have an appropriate lead-up, with Tina Turntables pumping out synth-pop beats through the afternoon and evening. Arrive early to claim your turf – picnic blankets, airbeds and beanbags are all popular options – and grab something from one of the numerous food trucks to prevent mid-movie hunger pains. Then settle in for an hour and a half of bad hair, great one-liners and the answer to the question of whether men and women can really ever just be friends.
