South Island Moon Festival

Overview

The 'moon landing' may have happened way back in 1969, but the moon is landing in Christchurch this September for a free multi-day arts and culture festival. The South Island Moon Festival is going down as part of Christchurch's spring celebration of culture, Bloom 2021, and will feature a range of cultural and art events predominately centred around traditional and contemporary Asian culture.

The festival will feature a 7.5-metre-high scale model of the moon and an inflatable astronaut artwork that will take over Scott Statue Reserve. Alongside the astronaut will be the aptly titled Astromer's Bar so you can sip a drink while staring up at the inflatable.

Outside of the moon and astronaut will be K-Pop and C-Pop performances, opera, Christchurch's biggest-ever karaoke stage and a pop-up street food village. Noodles, dumplings and street food will all be available, plus sweets and coffee to enjoy after dinner. The street food vendors will be accompanied by licensed bar areas so you can explore the festivities with a drink in hand.

Completing the festivities will be lights and lanterns that will be installed around Christchurch to light up the city.

The South Island Moon Festival will be open every night 5–10pm from Thursday, September 30 until Sunday, October 3.
