Overview

Dance and classical aren't music genres you'd usually find swirling around in the same basket — unless you have a particular bent for the orchestral 'Sandstorm' covers found in the depths of YouTube. Synthony - A Generation of Dance Music is here to prove that the disciplines go hand in hand.

After a sellout debut last year, the event will return to Auckland Town Hall on 15 September. The event will see the Auckland Symphony Orchestra and a selection of local DJs combine to play the biggest dance tracks of the last 30 years.

Ryan Yoens, whose credits include The Hobbit, has undertaken the role of Orchestrator, coordinating lights, lasers and mapped video for the experience. ASO Music Director and Conductor, Peter Thomas, will lead the 90-piece orchestra through a selection of dance floor bangers note-for-note, while George FM DJ General Lee adds some touches to the live mix.

The event will also feature live performances from P Digsss (Shapeshifter), Ria Hall, Helen Corry and Omega Levine before DJs Greg Churchill and Dick Johnson carry the party into the small hours.

Tickets go on sale June 26.
