Overview

Putting a knife in a toaster is a bad idea. Really bad. But some ideas are brilliant, and powerful. Those are ideas worth sharing, and it is these which make up the focus of the upcoming TEDx Auckland conference.

TED is a global community which seeks to bring together people from all over the world who engage with ideas and each other and seek to both understand and change the world. TEDx ('x' marks it as an independently organised TED event) is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

TEDxAuckland says that their mission is to "make it one of the Pacific's leading platform of great ideas, storytelling, creativity and actionable innovation to the rest of the world; to create and foster a sense of community amongst the people and organisations who have gathered (and continue to gather) around this event and to provide a cultural focus and impetus for conversation and debate".

At the annual 'Ideas Worth Spreading' TEDx Auckland event, several speakers will feature, presenting their ideas and knowledge. These include:

Artist Michelle Tuffery, eye doctor at Gisborne hospital Dr. Hong Sheng Chiong, award-winning scientist Dr. Siouxsie Wiles,  founding Director of Te Punaha Matatini, a Centre of Research Excellence Shaun Hendy, 14-year-old ocean ambassador Riley and her father Steve Hathaway, Professor of Biological Anthropology in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Otago Lisa Matisoo-Smith, founder of 'Take My Hands' a not-for- profit organisation that redistributes prosthetic, orthotic and medical equipment to those in need Janette Searle, Chairman of Waterfront Auckland and 6 times Mayor of the city of Waitakere Sir Bob Harvey and founder of elderly hip hop dance crew Billie Jordan, all of whom have their own 'Idea Worth Sharing'.

An unmissable day of inspiration and insight, for sure. Now to just figure out how to get that toast out of the toaster.
