Overview

Mercy Ships have been working in the world’s poorest countries for more than 36 years, with surgeons, nurses and crew all volunteering their services to provide medical care for those less fortunate.

The Surgery Ship gives an in-depth encounter on life aboard the world’s largest floating hospital, Africa Mercy. The documentary follows the life-altering work of volunteers aboard the medical ship and the patients they treat in the West African nation of Guinea, a country where there is only one doctor for every 10,000 people.

The film was nominated for a 2014 Australian Directors Guild Award and will see its New Zealand premiere at the Maidment Theatre. Madeleine Hetherton, the film’s Australian producer/director, will be flying to Auckland for the free event and after the screening will be joined by New Zealand's own Dr Thomson for a panel discussion on the making of the film and the on-going efforts of Mercy Ships in Africa.
