Overview
It sprouted in the Deep South of America, and then slowly perforated the world and entire musical genres. The African-European fusion music known as Jazz has been around for more than a century, and unlike other things from that bygone era, has managed to continue to inspire new generations to take up the mantle of keeping it alive, even on a relatively tiny island near a slightly larger island known as the North Island.
The Waiheke International Jazz Festival held on Waiheke Island this Easter is a celebration of that distinct sound, with local and international artists gathering on the island to celebrate the music.
Performers include New Zealand legend and former The Dudes frontman Peter Urlich, revered London blues singer T.J. Johnson, folk artist Tiny Ruins, Switzerland-born Nicole Johänntgen, Youtube celebrity Jamie McDell, Auckland band Sal Valentine and the Babyshakes, lively covers band Hipstamatics and the Gipsy Kings-influenced Voxnova.
