Waitangi Day Celebrations

Commemorating New Zealand's founding document.
Francois Finlay
January 31, 2017

Overview

More than just a day off and short working week, Waitangi Weekend acknowledges the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and the declaration of British sovereignty over New Zealand. The Waitangi Day Family Celebrations were originally launched in 1997 as a family-friendly event to commemorate the nation's founding document. Twenty years on, this year's event is set to feature top Māori musicians, kapa haka, arts and craft stalls, local food stalls and information of historical and cultural significance.

The Waitangi Day Family Celebrations will open at Hayman Park with a powhiri from 9.30am. The celebrations will continue with performances from iconic band Ardijah, Rob Ruha, Troy Kingi, Adam Whauwhau, Ora Taukamo, Josie Clarke and DJ Manchoo.

It is a zero-waste, smoke-free and alcohol-free event.
