Overview

It's been 20 years since the start of the annual charitable Wattie's Cans Film Festival. The premise is pretty simple: rock up up to ten days before the night (held on the 13th of November this year), trade a movie ticket for a can of food, and then enjoy a good movie on the night.

All cans donated are shipped to Salvation Army food banks across New Zealand - which have seen well over one million cans donated to their cause. Each can donated gets matched by a can from Watties. A total of 43,064 cans were donated to The Salvation Army via the Festival last year.

This year Reading Cinemas, EVENT Cinemas, and Hoyts Cinemas are all once again on board to offer their theatres for the night, along with some other independent cinemas nationwide. The festival also has some other pretty exciting new and top secret activities planned. It's all still rather hush-hush but knowing the festival, it'll be good.

The movies showing this year will be Despicable Me 2, Planes, One Direction's documentary, and Smurfs 2.
