Overview

Originally scheduled to take over Auckland's waterfront in August, but postponed due to the second COVID-19 outbreak, We Love Aotearoa festival will give it another crack at ASB Showgrounds this December.

The free three-part event was launched by a group of international visitors — including an American video game developer and Spanish racecar driver — to celebrate NZ's efforts to moderate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Held on Saturday, 19 December from 10am to 3pm, the 'Whānau Fun Day' is billed as a family-friendly "carnival of live music and performances, food trucks, workshops and activities," and will include a silent disco, virtual reality experiences, interactive art installations and more. Live performances can also be expected from Stan Walker and local cultural groups.

From 5pm, the adults-only celebration kicks in with a licensed bar and food trucks spread across the Showgrounds. Performing for free between two stages will be Ladi6, Sons of Zion, Troy Kingi & The Clutch, Leisure, JessB, Chaii, Frank Booker, Flamingo Pier, Clicks, Dual, and HalfQueen. The final run of tickets will be available from Wednesday, 18 November at 10am.

The third part of the event — running Saturday and Sunday — is a virtual reality event showcasing the latest in gaming technology. The We Love VR zone will see the country's top developers demonstrate their titles across 20 stations.
