Overview

It's all happening down on Federal Street this summer. Alongside the recently announced All Blacks Experience, which looks into the world of our national rugby teams, the district is set to host a new attraction from Weta Workshop.

Weta Workshop Unleashed is called a "fantastical film effects workshop," where visitors can explore the worlds of horror, sci-fi and fantasy in-the-making. The Wellington-based special effects and prop company, which famously helped bring The Lord of the Rings trilogy to life, will offer a journey through its creative process.

Across the 90-minute guided experience ticket holders will explore a world where the lines between fantasy and reality are blurred. Expect to see everything from monsters, giants and robots to interactive gizmos, discombobulating displays and set pieces from the worlds of horror, fantasy and sci-fi. The experience is not recommended for those with conditions aggravated by fright or stress.

There'll also be eye-popping practical effects so you can discover how the workshop designs, builds and brings the movie magic to life. And on the way out the gift shop will have plenty of collectibles, keepsakes and tools for your own craft.
